What is the Right Pack Weight for Backpacking in Grand Canyon?

The correct answer for this question depends entirely on the Grand Canyon backpacking experience of any given individual. Newcomers and first-timers should heed the recommendation of the Park Service’s Backcountry Information Center. Their advice is that a hiker should carry no more than 15% of their body weight.  Any pack weight up to one fifth of your body weight is certainly a prudent guideline, and your back will thank you for it after your hike is over.

Veteran Grand Canyon backpackers fall on either side of the Service’s recommendation. Some have been known to carry behemoth packs on monumental treks without the slightest letup, and it’s difficult to carry enough supplies for a week long hike and still have your pack weigh 15% of your body. Others steadfastly adhere to the motto of “travel light” and still have longer, enjoyable backcountry excursions.
